CREATING SPACE FOR TRANS PEOPLE TO TELL OUR OWN STORIES

A COMMUNITY PHOTO PROJECT PROMOTING VISIBILITY AND EMPOWERMENT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Trans Portraits Community Photo Project is about promoting visibility and empowerment for the trans community in the UK. We collect stories from trans participants - based around a different theme each year - and connect those participants with trans photographers for portrait sessions.

The aim of the project is to give trans people the opportunity to tell our own stories - both behind and in front of the camera - while also creating an empowering experience for everyone who takes part.

We release an annual magazine as part of the project,  focusing on a new theme for each issue. Our theme for 2025 is Trans Joy, and we're aiming to feature 8 different participants around the UK.

OUR MAGAZINE

As part of the project we release an annual (in theory!) magazine, featuring the stories and photos taken for the project, along with a few further articles, such as photo essays or interviews.

The first issue of the Trans Portraits magazine was released in November 2022. It features participants from the first iteration of the project - Bristol Trans Portraits - along with two exclusive articles. Issue 2 is set to release in November 2025. The theme for this next issue is Trans Joy!

You can either purchase copies of our magazine as they become available from our shop, or become a supporter on Patreon to access new issues as they become available (and at a reduced price)!

GET INVOLVED

Throughout 2025 we're collecting stories about trans joy! Submissions open twice per year, and we choose 4 participants from each round of submissions.

Participation is open to anyone in the UK who is trans or non-binary. Priority is given to those from marginalised or underrepresented backgrounds; 50% of our spaces are reserved for those from the Global Majority, and we also prioritise disabled folks and those over the age of 40.

If you're interested in getting involved, please have a read through our FAQs and read all the information carefully. The next round of submissions will open in late June 2025!

FEATURED STORIES

Read through a selection of featured stories, including participants from the first iteration of the project - Bristol Trans Portraits:

"I am called ‘sir’ and ‘m’am’ within the same breath by different people on the same street. Sometimes I laugh at them, as it tells me how fickle preconceived ideas on gender can be. I’m working to remind myself that I am whoever I want to be. Whatever I am becoming, I feel beautiful and free."

"I came out as non-binary/genderqueer last year and have been looking for ways to express myself and embrace my gender non-conformity in the public eye - as a therapeutic process for myself as well as to empower and encourage other gender non-conforming people.

This project is a wonderful example of how we can make ourselves more visible and celebrate the things that make us who we are, visibly, and at the same time encourage others to do the same."
